Background

Luis Ortiz had a mixed  amateur career, failing to achieve pivotal success in the amateurs and racking up double-digit losses throughout his tenure. He did manage to win the national Cuban Championships once in 2006, but failed to scure another win in the tournament, although he did manage to reach the semi-final and quarter-final several times.

After losing in the 2008 Cuban Championships, Ortiz ended is amateur career with a total amount of 22 wins and 14 losses.

Accomplishments

Luis Ortiz landed in the pro ranks in 2010, winning by TKO in his debut match.

In the course of the next 8 years, Ortiz went unbeaten and built himself the reputation as the boogeyman [1] of the division. Eventually he caught the notice of WBC World Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and their fight was soon inked for March, 2018.

Luis Ortiz pushed Wilder to 10 rounds, almost stopping Wilder in the 7th round, before being knocked out by a vicious right hand from Wilder. A rematch was held a year later, and Ortiz was knocked out once again, though his loss this time around came earlier.

He successfully faced two more opponents in 2020 and 2022, most noticeably beating former US world heavyweight champion Charles Martin by TKO in the 6th round.

He followed that up with a decent but losing performance against Andy Ruiz Jr. on September 4, where he was knocked down three times.

While his losses had somewhat evaporated Ortiz’ reputation as the ‘Boogeyman’, Ortiz has shown a rugged resilience throughout his career that had led him undefeated against every opponent other than Deontay. At this stage of his career, while being considered one of the oldest competitors in the sport, Ortiz is still a threat and is still avoided by high-ranked fighters for the “lose-lose” scenario in which these potential contenders might face themselves in, due to his skill, ability and power at his advanced age.

Boxing Style

luis ortiz boxing style

Luis Ortiz is a southpaw Heavyweight that has an unsuspectingly quick jab, and a strong left hand that has landed him a high KO-rate of 84%. Close-up – and in the clinch – he has also shown himself to be lethal with uppercuts, and his hand speed has dropped many would-be contenders.

Ortiz has also shown underrated footwork as a pro, being able to close and widen the stance much quicker than most Heavyweights his size.
