Accomplishments

Though Mairis Briedis would eventually make his name as a Cruiserweight, he fought as a Heavyweight during the beginning years of professional boxing career, even going up against Heavyweight veteran and former world title challenger Danny Williams in just his eight fight.

Remaining unbeaten while dominating his opponents, Briedis won his first mid-tier title in 2013 when he moved down to Cruiserweight, and continued on to win several more over the next four years.

He won his first world title – the WBC Cruiserweight – by beating fellow contender Marco Huck for the then-vacant WBC title in April, 2017, but would subsequently lose his title to Oleksandr Usyk in the semi-final of the WBSS, centered around the Cruiserweight division in 2018.

When another WBSS was held between 2018 and 2020 – again pertaining to the Cruiserweight division, Briedis quickly grabbed his opportunity for a world title and beat both Krysztof Glowacki and Yuniel Dorticos – two contenders that had been amongst the top of the rankings for years – to win the WBO title, and the IBF & The Ring titles respectively.

Though he lost the WBO title before facing Dorticos at the WBSS due to his involvement in said tournament – further complicated by the fact the WBO title was won in the same tournament, Briedis defended his IBF and The Ring title once in 2021 before defending them against Australian challenger Jai Opetaia.

On July 2nd in 2022, Briedis fought Opetaia in a defense of his world and lineal title, but succumbed to UD loss to the Australian, losing his titles in the process. His loss to Opetaia marked the second loss of his career overall.
