Background

Marlen Esparza had a very respectable amateur career where she amassed a record of 77-17-1 in a period that spanned around a decade. She has won several national competitions including the National Golden Gloves (which she has won twice) and the USA National Championships which she won at least seven times, a near unmatched feat in women’s and men’s boxing.

Her performance as an amateur was also noticed internationally. In 2014 she won the World Boxing Championships tournament in its entirety, while she also brought home at least two bronze medals participating in the competition. Esparza also qualified for the 2012 Olympics where she managed to make it to the semi-final before losing, subsequently earning her a bronze medal for her efforts.

Her prevalent career ended when she decided to turn professional and made her official debut in 2017.

Accomplishments

Marlen Esparza showed excellent form as she settled herself in the women’s Flyweight division, marking her talent with key decision victories over her opponents. In her seventh match in 2019, she faced fellow countrywoman Seniesa Estrada in a title match for the WBA interim (world) title. Despite her efforts, Esparza lost on the scorecards after the match was stopped a match earlier due to a bad cut Esparza suffered from an accidental headbutt.

Esparza’s first career loss did little to discourage her to aim as high as possible, and after a comfortable two-match winning streak from 2020 to 2021, Esparza faced WBC Flyweight champion Ibeth Zamora Silva (a month after her last fight in 2021) in a successful title bout that earned Esparza the WBC title.

In her next match, a year later, she met Naoko Fujioka for her first unification match. She again won handily, and subsequently won the WBA and The Ring titles for her efforts.

Boxing Style

marlen esparza boxing style

Marlen Esparza is a versatile Orthodox boxer that prefers to fight according to what gives her an advantage as an opponent. As a result she is capable of fighting on both the front and back foot, and she is highly-capable of using her ring IQ to correctly judge the distance between her opponent to launch her offensive, or position her body to absorb or avoid her opponent’s attacks. She prefers to stay aggressive, but also doesn’t look out of place when she’s on the defensive, and she’s proven to be capable of outworking any opponent in the ring. Her resilience is also palpable, as at some point she won a unanimous decision despite suffering a knockdown against opponent Ibeth Zamora Silva.
