Background
Fighting as an amateur as both a Cruiserweight and a Heavyweight, Hunter’s first notable accomplishment was reaching the final of the 2006 USA Golden Gloves tournament where he lost on points. Later that same year he lost to Tyson Fury in an international amateur match-up between USA and UK Heavyweights.
In the 2007 Pan-American tournament he lost in the semi-final, but months later in the 2007 USA National Championships he finally showed his potential by winning it. Two years later he repeated the feat, and in 2011 and 2012 he proved his talent once again by winning the USA National Gloves, and the USA National Championships respectively.
In 2012, Michael Hunter qualified for the 2012 London Olympics where he lost out to future Light Heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev in the first round. He entered the pro ranks of boxing following his failure to capture a medal in the Olympics.

Accomplishments
Starting his career as a Cruiserweight, Hunter had a successful unbeaten run with a high-string of KO’s ending up with eight KO’s in eleven matches. In 2016 he fought opponent Isiah Thomas for the WBO-NABO Cruiserweight title, beating his American compatriot by UD in ten rounds.
In April 2017, Hunter was scheduled to fight Oleksandr Usyk for Usyk’s second defense of his WBO World Cruiserweight title. Their fight lasted for twelve rounds and Hunter eventually succumbed to the Ukrainian in a unanimous decision loss.
Following his loss to Usyk, Hunter decided to move up to Heavyweight. He slowly fought himself up the ranks, facing Martin Bakole for the then-vacant IBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight title in October 2018. Michael Hunter managed to beat Bakole by TKO in the tenth round, and followed up his win with another victory a mere month later against Alexander Ustinov by TKO again, winning the WBA International Heavyweight title in the process. He solidified is status as a potential Heavyweight contender by beating Sergey Kuzmin by UD and netting himself another belt, the WBA Inter-Continental Heavyweight title.
In December of 2019, Michael Hunter fought Alexander Povetkin in a co-main event clash on the Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz II bout. The highly-aggressive and entertaining match ended in a split-decision draw where Hunter showcased his sturdiness and adaptability as a Heavyweight, proving that he belonged in the divison by still standing despite being visibly hurt several times in during the match.
He proceeded to win his next two fights in 2020 and 2021, both by KO or TKO in the 4th round. On December 2 in 2021, Hunter ended up in a split-decision draw against fellow American Jerry Forrest.
Boxing Style

Michael Hunter has proven his talent in both the Cruiserweight and the Heavyweight division by displaying advanced footwork, jabs, power and speed in the majority of his fights. Against the slick and quick boxer Oleksandr Usyk and veteran powerful Heavyweight Alexander Povetkin, Hunter has proven his durability as a fighter by withstanding their attacks.
In his fight against Martin Bakole, Hunter also showed to have decent good stamina levels, managing to stay move often with his feet to avoid the bigger man’s power punces while still working to land power punches and combinations of his own to eventually stop Bakole.
