Background

Natasha Jonas was one of Britain’s best female competitors during her tenure as an amateur. She won a multitude of competitions which includes five ABA Championships. She further competed as part of the amateur national boxing team, Team GB, and subsequently won silverware, though she didn’t succeed in bringing home a gold medal.

In 2012 Jonas became the first female boxer from Great Britain to compete at the Olympics, which coincidentally was staged in her home country. Though she made it to the quarter-final of the 2012 Olympics, she lost to the eventual winner of the tournament Katie Taylor, who had been considered a sort of a rival given they faced each other prior to the Olympics.

Accomplishments

Natasha Jonas made her professional debut in 2017 and enjoyed quick and pivotal success with her early string of stoppage wins. In 2018 she won her first title – the WBA International – as a Super Featherweight, but lost it in her next match and first title defense against Viviane Obenauf who stopped her in the fourth round of their bout.

Jonas picked up her winning form for the next couple of years. After failing to win several her first world titles when she drew – controversially so – against fellow Brit Terri Harper, Jonas faced amateur Katie Taylor in 2021 in an Undiputed bout for all of Taylor’s titles, in the Lightweight division. Despite putting up a valiant effort, Jonas succumbed to a UD loss and was left to fight past her disappointment afterwards.

Her career would face an upswing in 2022 when she conquered her first world title (WBO junior middleweight/super welterweight) by beating then-holder Chris Namús through a stoppage victory in the 2nd round. Later that same year in September, Natasha Jonas met with Patricia Berghult in a unification match, beating the Swede by unanimous decision to win the women’s WBC world title to unify for the first time of her career.

Natasha Jonas unified for a second time in her career when she beat former IBF champion Marie-Eve Dicaire by UD in November of 2022, taking her total of  world titles in the Junior Middleweight/Super Welterweight division up to three, with only one title (WBA) still remaining to prevent her from becoming undisputed.

Despite the opportunity to unify against the WBA champion Terri Harper who Jonas had drawn against in 2020, Jonas moved down to Welterweight in 2023 to face Kandi Wyatt on July 1st. Jonas became a two-weight champion in the process of defeating Wyatt by TKO and winning the IBF welterweight title.

Jonas returned in January of 2024 against former unified 130 lbs champion Mikaela Mayer, defeating her by (controversial) split-decision to defend her IBF title successfully for the first time.

Boxing Style

natasha jonas boxing style

Natasha Jonas is a southpaw that tends to employ an inside game, meaning that she prefers to fight up close. She complements this risky style with the technical skills she has built up since her amateur career, most evident through her footwork. She has also developed a strong and quick jab which she has used to fight decently from the outside, or enter inside the pocket. She is also capable of launching a variety of accurate punches in the midst of being locked in combat. Defensively she tends to avoid punches with the movement of her feet, but she can also endure onslaughts from up close when she stays concentrated.
