WBC American super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster will be defending his WBC title for the first time against Mexican contender Eduardo Hernandez on October 28th at the Poliforum Benito Juarez in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
O’Shaquie Foster (20-2, 11 KO’s) surprised many when he secured a unanimous decision victory at super featherweight over Rey Vargas (36-1, 22 KO’s), who still holds the WBC championship in the weight division below at featherweight. Vargas had moved up to 130 lbs with the intention of challenging himself after the WBC title was vacated following Shakur Stevenson’s (20-0, 10 KO’s) move up to lightweight.
However, at super featherweight, Vargas faced a formidable opponent in Foster who defeated him over twelve rounds. Foster, aged 29, will be defending his WBC title outside of his home country, the United States, choosing instead to defend it in the native country of his opponent, Eduardo Hernandez (34-1, 31 KO’s), Mexico.
Foster’s victory over Vargas marked his first-ever world title win, a title he will now need to retain when he faces Eduardo Hernandez on October 28th.
Hernandez, aged 25, will be participating in his first world title match but enters the fight with more experience due to the number of fights he has had compared to Foster. However, Hernandez has never faced an opponent of O’Shaquie Foster’s caliber, and his lack of experience on the world stage will undoubtedly pose the greatest challenge of his career.
Both fighters appear evenly matched, promising an exciting bout at the Poliforum Benito Juarez on October 28th, with Hernandez known for his power while Foster seems to be highly-regarded when it comes to his skills in the ring. The fight card will be televised and streamed by DAZN and is organized by Golden Boy Promotions.
