American former welterweight world champions Robert Guerrero and Andre Berto have both come out of retirement to face each other once more in the last boxing event that Showtime will broadcast after more than two decades of featuring the sport extensively. Their last match, which occurred in 2012, was won by Guerrero, who secured a unanimous decision (UD) victory on that night.
Both Andre Berto (32-5, 24 KO’s) and Robert Guerrero (37-6-1, 20 KO’s) have been retired for a number of years, with Berto’s last fight occurring in 2018, while Guerrero last fought in 2021, where he achieved an impressive UD victory over former world champion Victor Ortiz.
Both fighters are currently aged 40, raising some eyebrows as they are set to participate in Showtime’s last boxing show for the foreseeable future. The two Americans boast impressive resumes with both losses and wins against reputable fighters. However, the decision to stage a rematch was not expected, given that both warriors have made the most out of their careers after fighting each other.
There are also several concerns when it comes to their age and their inactivity out of the ring, mostly centered around health. However, the pedigree both fighters bring to the ring can dispel any questions of health concerns or even entertainment value.
The two will be featured on the undercard of the boxing event headlined by David Morrell and Sena Agbeko, set to take place at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Their match is scheduled for a total of 10 rounds, a significant development considering this number of rounds is usually reserved for professional boxers at the top level or close to it. Guerrero and Berto will be fighting at welterweight for their upcoming bout on Saturday, December 16.
