American contender Rolando “Rolly” Romero, best known for his scintillating fight with Gervonta Davis in 2022, will make his return to the ring against WBA champion Alberto Puello. The two are set to face each other on May 13th at Junior Welterweight/Super Lightweight. A venue has yet to be established but it is certain the fight will be held in the United States.

Dominican Alberto Puello (21-0, 10 KO’s),28, first captured the WBA title in August of 2022 and will make his first title defense against Rolly Romero (14-1, 12 KO’s), 27, who is coming off of a knockout loss against WBA ‘Regular’ Lightweight champion, Gervonta Davis (28-0, 26 KO’s).

Puello, who is best known for his technical skills, faces a genuine threat in Romero who is mostly known for his own impressive power and all-around balanced skillset. Puello has a couple advantages going into his match with Romero however, as Romero’s last match was a defeat, and the American will be moving up a weight class. Romero is not fully unused to the 140 lbs division, as he has fought there earlier, but his experience as a Super Lightweight is still somewhat limited.

Alberto Puello’s last match was a hard-won victory against Ukrainian Botirzhon Akhmedov (9-2, 8 KO’s) – also known as Batyr Akhmedov -which culminated in him winning his first world title. Having already faced a powerful puncher in Akhmedov and being well-known for fighting at range, Rolly Romero’s unusual but effective style provides Puello with another difficult challenge to overcome.

With Romero eager to move past his defeat to Davis, he will be looking to capitalize on his opportunity and try his hardest to prove his worth. Having boosted his own profile due to out-ring callouts and highly-entertaining interviews, a win over an unbeaten champion in Puello would only further boost his popularity in the States, and outside.
