Background
As a Light Heavyweight, Merhy won the French-based League of Boxing tournament and further on became a Belgium amateur champion. In 2012 he became he ended his amateur boxing career and became a professional.
Accomplishments
Debuting in 2013 and fighting as a Cruiserweight, Ryad Merhy went unbeaten for two years and eighteen fights before he fought for his first title, the WBC Silver International Cruiserweight title. After comfortably knocking out his opponent to win the WBC belt, he fought for another title a couple months later in 2016 where he again won by (T)KO.
After a five-match winning run following his first title wins, Merhy challenged Arsen Goulamirian for the WBA (Interim) World Cruiserweight title. Merhy held on in the fight until the eleventh round before being stopped by his French opponent.
Ryad Merhy quickly picked off where he left off following his loss, coasting to a winning streak where he won the interim version of the WBA World Cruiserweight title, before being promoted to ‘Regular’ champion somewhere in 2021. However, his stint as a champion came to a stop when he refused to fight Goulamirian again, resulting in him being stripped of his title.
After a warm-up fight in 2022 against a boxer with a losing record, Merhy fought against former Cruiserweight contender Kevin Lerena at the WBC’s created weight class of the Bridgerweight division, but fell to a UD loss to the South African after 12 rounds.
