Background

With an official claimed record of 215-15, Ryan Garcia showed immense talent throughout an amateur career that saw him become a national amateur champion fifteen times.

He noticeably fought Devin Haney in the amateurs in contests where they split their wins and losses several times.

At the age of 17, Garcia became a full-fledged professional when he made his debut on June 9 in 2016, roughly two months before turning 18.

Accomplishments

Ryan Garcia started off his career as a Lightweight where he started off well and recorded an impressive streak of knockouts or stoppages over a record number of matches in 2016.

In the same year, he also moved down to 130 lbs where he continued to find success, and additionally several titles from 2017 and onwards. As he moved up back to 135 lbs in 2018, he fought significantly better opponents while working himself up the rankings.

Garcia continued to win titles at Lightweight and in 2021, culminated his efforts with a stoppage win over British contender Luke Campbell to become the interim WBC world champion.

Personal issues kept him out of the ring for a year before he returned in 2022 where he subsequently beat high-ranked Lightweights Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna.

In April of 2023. Ryan Garcia faced Gervonta Davis in what was styled as a “mega fight” with no titles on the line. Garcia lost the match by KO after a body punch from Davis that left him unable to continue in the seventh round.

Garcia returned later that year on December 2nd where he presided over a knockout victory over lightweight contender Oscar Duarte in the eight round.

On April 20 in 2024, Ryan Garcia faced then-WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney for his title but was barred from winning it after coming in overweight during the official weigh-ins.

Though Garcia would subsequently defeat Haney by split-decision in a bout where Haney was knocked down several times, the match would later be ruled a no-contest followed a failed PED test by Garcia.

Boxing Style

Fighting in the orthodox stance, Ryan Garcia has developed himself to be able to use his reach and his height – if possible – to his full advantage. With a high knockout ratio, Garcia proved himself to have  underrated power which has mostly been demonstrated by the devastating left hook he has been known for throughout his career.
