Ryan Garcia vehemently denied he was going to fight former unified world champion Jose Carlos Ramirez following Oscar De La Hoya’s―his promoter―claims of a bout between the two being arranged. The two have had a public spat for the past year or so that has even culminated in Golden Boy―headed by De La Hoya―suing Garcia for attempting to breach his contract with the promotion.
This issue between the two emerged following Ryan Garcia’s (24-1, 20 KO’s) April 22nd loss to Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KO’s) and the conflict has clearly not yet subsided following Garcia’s latest revelation of him not aiming to fight Jose Ramirez (28-1, 18 KO’s), despite Oscar De La Hoya having stated otherwise recently.
“No [Jose] Ramirez. Let’s make that clear.” Garcia Tweeted yesterday without any further explanation.
Earlier this week, De La Hoya had claimed the supposed planned fight between Ryan Garcia and Rolando “Rolly” Romero (15-1, 13 KO’s) was no longer on the cards due to Romero pricing himself out. However, there has yet to be confirmation from both fighters’ sides as to whether this match should be ruled out.
Garcia, 25, is currently considered one of the highest rated super lightweight contenders in the world and was aiming for a first-time world title win by declaring his interest to fight WBA champion-in-recess Rolly Romero. However, Ismael Barroso (25-4-2, 23 KO’s) currently holds the WBA interim title and is but a mandate (by the WBA) away to face Romero before any other 140 lbs contender.
Romero is also nursing an unsubstantiated injury that would further complicate the possibility of the match occurring. Though it appeared that Floyd Mayweather Jr., promoter of Rolly Romero, was highly interested in arranging a fight between Garcia and his fighter,
Furthermore, Romero’s champion-in-recess status can be revoked if he chooses to fight anyone but Barroso who suffered a controversial stoppage loss to the American last year in May, only to land himself an opportunity to face Romero again following his January 6th win over Ohara Davies (25-3, 18 KO’s) to claim the WBA interim title.
Ryan Garcia’s beef with Oscar De La Hoya also appears to be spilling out following the super lighweight’s latest Tweet surrounding his promoter.
“Ryan Garcia vs Oscar De La Hoya at this point.” Garcia further Tweeted, signaling that his dispute with his promoter has not yet abated.
Off the back of Garcia’s Tweets, another 140 lbs contender in Arnold Barboza Jr. (29-0, 11 KO’s) made his intentions to fight Garcia known.
“Let’s make the fight happen between us.” Barboza Jr. stated following Garcia’s own assertion that he was not planning to face Ramirez.
Barboza, 32, is also a highly-rated contender at super lightweight―a division which is rife with American top talent―yet thus far Garcia has only expressed interest in fighting Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s) and Rolly Romero.
Notably, Garcia, Ramirez and Barboza Jr. are all currently signed to Golden Boy Promotions.
