Barely a month after declaring he wanted to face Devin Haney and weeks after revealing he'd fight Rolando "Rolly" Romero instead, Ryan Garcia seems to again have pivoted as his promoter reveals a fight with Jose Carlos Ramirez to be in the works. (Photo by Cris Esqueda/Golden Boy/Getty Images)

Ryan Garcia has now picked his third target in just a month following his declaration of interest to fight Devin Haney and Rolando Romero prior. The American 140-pounder now appears to be aiming to face Jose Ramirez, a recent signee to Golden Boy to whom Garcia is signed. Prior to Ramirez coming into the picture, Garcia seemed to be angling for a Haney fight before Romero became his target.

On January 17th, Golden Boy Promotions founder/chairman Oscar De La Hoya Tweeted the prospect of Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO’s) facing American former unified champion Jose Carlos Ramirez (28-1, 18 KO’s) who signed with Golden Boy roughly two weeks ago:

Looking like Ryan Garcia vs. Jose Ramirez is getting close and happening.De La Hoya stated yesterday.

Oscar De La Hoya also provided an answer to what happened to the Garcia-Romero fight and revealed that Romero had “priced himself out”.

Ryan Garcia remained quiet on the matter himself, but it should be noted that the fight seemed logistically difficult to make from the start. Not only does Rolando Romero (15-1, 13 KO’s) appear to have an undisclosed injury, Romero is currently signed to Mayweather Promotions who, like TGB Promotions, seems to not have any boxing shows lined up due to their association with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).

Garcia, who fights on the global streaming service of DAZN through Golden Boy, may no longer get a title opportunity but will certainly be able to improve his prospects of fighting for one if the bout with Jose Ramirez is arranged. Ramirez remains one of the most top-rated fighters at super lightweight since his 2021 loss to Josh Taylor (19-1, 13 KO’s) to become undisputed within the division.

Ramirez is currently on a two-win streak after fighting once in 2022 and 2023. His recent signing to Golden Boy further eases the prospect of Ryan Garcia facing him, and would be a highly-interesting fight given both Americans are considered to be one of the best contenders in the division.

Ramirez’ highest ranking is currently on the WBO’s ranking boards where he is ranked as #2 behind #1 Arnold Barboza Jr. (29-0, 11 KO’s), another Golden Boy fighter.
