Ryan Garcia has released information regarding Floyd Mayweather Jr that may not come as a surprise, but still reflects badly on boxing as a whole with a boxing legend appearing to be actively sabotaging other fighters’ careers. Through a post on social media, Garcia divulged Mayweather’s role into spurring him to come in overweight against Devin Haney, which likely attributed to Garcia’s majority decision win over Haney.
Earlier this year, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KO’s) had been spotted together socializing and training in Las Vegas―Mayweather’s hometown, leading to much speculation regarding what their meetings entailed. Several weeks later, Mayweather was suspected of playing an active role in influencing Garcia’s career by advising him to avoid fighting Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KO’s) to fight Rolando “Rolly” Romero (15-2, 13 KO’s) instead―with the suspected motive of attempting to deprive Haney of a fight.
Approximately a month later, Garcia signed to face Haney after Romero was revealed to be fighting Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KO’s) instead; a decision that Romero would come to rue as he suffered a destructive stoppage loss to Cruz on March 30th.
Though it is still unknown what exact role Floyd Mayweather has with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC)―aside from his promotional outfit, Mayweather Promotions (MP), working alongside PBC closely, Mayweather alluded to himself being partially in control of PBC last year; suggesting he held an abundance of influence within the company.
This influence now seems to be spreading elsewhere, with Golden Boy Promotions star Garcia exposing Mayweather’s role through a post on Twitter/X.
“Floyd [Mayweather Jr] told me to come in over 3 lbs. He told me, ‘f*** Bill Haney’. Whatever.” Garcia posted yesterday on Twitter.
Ryan Garcia’s statements now makes it the second time Floyd Mayweather Jr has been involved in potential sabotage of Devin Haney’s career, having first advised a potential opponent to avoid Haney, to now being suspected of advising Garcia to come in overweight; which led to Garcia being unable to win the WBC super lightweight title that currently still belongs to Haney.
Furthermore, Garcia claimed Mayweather had urged Garcia to utter profanity towards Devin Haney’s father and trainer, Bill Haney, indicating that Mayweather had personal grievances against at least a member of Haney’s team.
This apparent personal conflict between Floyd Mayweather and Bill Haney came was seemingly confirmed when they both engaged heatedly with each other on an Instagram livestream, and Garcia’s provides a deeper look into what can be regarded as Mayweather attempting to influence fighters’ careers. Both Garcia and Haney seem to have been impacted by Mayweather’s advise to Garcia, with Haney suffering a crushing loss to Ryan Garcia while Garcia purposefully deprived himself of an opportunity to become world champion in order to gain an advantage in the ring.
Thus far, Floyd Mayweather’s motivations seem to revolve around Devin Haney with Ryan Garcia used as a potential pawn to disrupt Haney’s career. The alleged actions of Mayweather will likely not see him suffer any consequences, as there is currently no organization in boxing that handles subversive or manipulate matters such as these, but Mayweather’s reputation may continue to deteriorate as his alleged scheming is being brandished for all to see.
