Background

Shakur Stevenson was a prominent prospect both domestically and internationally as he went on to achieve great honors, including gold medals. He was most accomplished at the Youth Olympic Games and Youth World Championships in which he won gold, but he also did well in various other competitions including the Olympics – where he suffered a final round defeat to future contender Robeisy Ramirez – where he earned silver for his efforts.

He also competed in the World Series of Boxing, winning all his (two) matches in the process, and he had similar success in the USA Youth National Championships which he won thrice throughout his amateur career.

Shakur Stevenson became a full-fledged professional in 2017, making his debut as a Featherweight.

Accomplishments

Shakur Stevenson had a budding start as a professional, coursing through his opponents with decisive victories or stoppage wins to quickly herald himself as a future world champion.

In the first quarter of 2019 he won three international/continental titles to prove himself as a viable contender for the division’s world champions, and in October of that same year he conquered the WBO world title, thus making him become a world champion for the first time at the young age of 22.

He wouldn’t go on to dominate his division however as he chose to move up to Super Featherweight instead where he went on to win een more world titles in a span of two years. He faced credible champions and contenders of the division in Jamal Herring, Oscar Valdez and Robson Conceição

Stevenson also unified for the first time of his career against Oscar Valdez, and netted his first title win at 130 lbs by beating Jamal Herring.

In 2023, following his successful UD victory over Robson Conceição in 2022, Shakur Stevenson moved up to 135 lbs where he met with then-unbeaten contender Shuichiro Yoshino on April 8th.

Stevenson’s debut at Lightweight was ultimately extremely successful as he thoroughly dominated against Yoshino to eventually stop him in just the 6th round of their match.

Shakur Stevenson eventually an opportunity to become a world champion in the same year as he was scheduled to fight Dominican lightweight contender Edwin De Los Santos on November 16th for the vacant WBC lightweight title.

On that date, Stevenson became a three- division champion as he defeated De Los Santos by unanimous decision in a fight that was reportedly recorded as a twelve-round fight with the lowest landed number of punches in the entire sport.

Boxing Style

shakur stevenson boxing style

A Southpaw, Shakur Stevenson’s style can best be described as elite, judging by his performances in the ring. While he doesn’t cling to one style, and is able to fight different depending on which opponent he fights, he seems mostly known for his efficiency when being aggressive, meaning that he is often accurate despite using relentless pressure to beat his opponent. He is however, much more than a pressure fighter, and has shown himself to be able to box both inside and outside the range of his opponent.

He marks his talent with profiency in the fundamentals of boxing including footwork, body & head movement, positioning and even ring IQ, and he has also shown a high degree of toughness, resilience and high work rate in the ring. He’s defensively-sound, which isn’t often seen in younger fighters, and seems very adept at avoiding or minimizing damage while still being able to deliver debilitating damage himself.
