Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder appears to be actually making a comeback against fellow American Curtis Harper, but no indication has been given on which network he will fight on. While he had been linked with BLK Prime in the past, the subscription service has yet to come out and confirm their capture of Wilder. Furthermore, with prior reports of Devin Haney being linked with fighting on BLK Prime now turning out to be untrue, Wilder’s next destination still seems to be up in the air.
The prevalent issue remains the questionable nature of earlier reports claiming that BLK Prime would stage fight cards with boxers of considerable name recognition such as Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KO’s). BLK Prime’s last reported signing of a well-known boxer in Adrien Broner would become a disaster as the company failed to produce a single fight for the multi-division champion.
While it is plausible Wilder has chosen a humbler path in his career as a free agent, opting to not fight on a Riyadh Season card which would likely match him against a tough heavyweight (200+ lbs) contender, BLK Prime would have to fork out at least a seven-figure payday to intrigue Wilder.
With the company set to stage its second-ever boxing event which will be headlined by Greg Hackett and Brian Norman Sr―who are respectively a journeyman and retired fighter, doubts linger as to whether BLK Prime can afford the likes of Wilder who last competed on a Riyadh Season card in June. Due to the competitive nature of fights on Riyadh Season cards and as referenced many times by fighters, athletes who compete as a part of Riyadh Season appear to be very well-compensated.
Wilder’s future expected opponent, Curtis Harper (18-11, 12 KO’s), did reveal to The Ring that he had signed on to face Wilder in April, though there was no mention of BLK Prime. Harper, 36, is best known for walking off in the middle of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) match against Nigerian contender Efe Ajagba (20-1, 14 KO’s). He currently boasts a record of four wins over his last five matches from 2023 to 2024.
Current circumstances veer towards a Wilder versus Harper fight being somewhat valid, though only time will tell whether BLK Prime will be the network they would fight on. Notably, reports earlier this month suggested two-division champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s) would compete on BLK Prime.
However, this news was confirmed to be untrue after it was recently revealed Haney would fight this May against a yet-to-be named opponent on a Riyadh Season card, and subsequently face Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KO’s) in a rematch somewhere in October.
