Top Rank has announced its latest show which will be headlined on June 29th by WBO 140 lbs champion Teofimo Lopez who will be defending his world title against Canadian challenger Steve Claggett. The James L. Knight Center, located in Miami Beach, Florida, has been chosen as the venue to stage this card.

American champion Teofimo Lopez (20-1, 13 KO’s)―also known as “The Takeover”―will be defending his WBO super lightweight title for the second time since his controversial unanimous decision (UD) victory over Jamaine Ortiz (17-2-1, 8 KO’s) earlier this year, with Canadian Steve Claggett (38-7-2, 26 KO’s) approved as a worthy next challenger for Lopez to face.

As far as contenders go, Claggett only barely meets the requirements with his current #10 position on the WBO’s super lightweight rankings; allowing Claggett to overtake even #1-rated WBO 140 lbs contender Arnold Barboza Jr (30-0, 11 KO’s). However, despite clearly being the underdog for his fight with Lopez, Claggett appears to have more than twice the experience as a professional than Lopez, which might give him some ammo to cause a potential upset.

For Teofimo Lopez, he will not only be able to get a voluntary defense out of the way, but further establish himself as the best in the 140 lbs division following Devin Haney’s (31-1, 15 KO’s) recent loss to Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KO’s). While Claggett might not appear to be the best opponent for Lopez to move competitively ahead of his fellow 140 lbs champions, being active is bound to help and improve the American star.

The announcement of the headlining Lopez-Claggett fight has come paired with the return of Cuban former world champion Robeisy Ramirez (13-2, 8 KO’s) against Mexican contender Brandon Leon Benitez (21-2, 9 KO’s). The two will be fighting at featherweight, indicating Ramirez is not content to move up following last year’s loss to Rafael Espinoza (24-0, 20 KO’s)―which culminated in Ramirez losing his WBO 126 lbs title to Espinoza.

Nico Ali Walsh (9-1, 5 KO’s), grandson of the legendary Muhammad Ali who co-founded Top Rank, will also appear on the card and attempt to resurrect his career after a majority decision (MD) loss last year forced him on the sidelines. He returned in March of this year, successfully beating a journeyman by unanimous decision (UD), and is set to continue his career as a middleweight where he likely still hopes to contend for a world title in the future. Walsh will be facing countryman Sona Akale (9-1, 4 KO’s).
