Confusion reigns about the potential Errol Spence Jr. (28-0, 22 KO’s) vs. Terence Crawford (38-0, 29 KO’s) Undisputed bout’s supposed agreement, after reports surfaced approximately two weeks ago about both fighters having agreed to terms for a match said to take place somewhere in November.
The actual contract negotiations seem to not have been agreed on however. Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford have been rumored to fight one another since 2018, yet despite the fight was previously deemed too difficult to set up because of apparent tensions between the Al Haymon (Spence’s promoter) and Bob Arum (Crawford’s previous promoter). Crawford is currently a free agent, and has apparently already signed his side of the contract. Spence Jr. and Crawford both have yet to sign, according to reports.
Spence has previously stoked the flames for a potential fight by questioning Crawford’s resume and pressing that he was on the “wrong side of the street” due to being signed with Bob Arum. But with the tensions between the promoters recently having reportedly evaporated, there is one less stumbling block in the way of the fight.
In the video above, Spence Jr. made it clear that Terence Crawford being at ESPN/Top Rank was one of the primary reasons that the match couldn’t happen and he even stressed that Crawford “should be at Showtime or FOX” for an Undisputed bout to occur. With those obstacles now out of the way, there should be no further issues. Though Crawford isn’t technically a PBC fighter, his status as a free agent offers him the opportunity to temporarily align himself with Errol Spence’s promotion, and apparently he has done just that given the reports that he already signed for the Undisputed match with Spence.
Crawford hasn’t made his case to really want the fight easier by not directly signing with the PBC, even after promoter Eddie Hearn advised him publicly to sign with Al Haymon’s promotion. The fight was apparently stalled several times because of Terence Crawford’s persistence in signing with Top Rank in the past, and though Crawford split from Top Rank in 2021, his attempts to call out Spence Jr. came only recently as of 2021.
Both fighters are still undefeated – having not even a draw on their record – and both also hold world titles, with Spence Jr. holding the WBA (which he only recently won from Yordenis Ugás), WBC and IBF Welterweight titles while Crawford holds the WBO title – which he won off of Australian Jeff Horn by stopping him in the ninth round – at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on June 9th in 2018. With both boxers being champions and positioned as the number one and number two (with Spence Jr. ranked nr.1) of the The Ring’s official Welterweight rankings, their Undisputed match would likely include The Ring’s lineal title alongside their own, creating even higher stakes since The Ring’s Welterweight title has been left vacant since Floyd Mayweather’s (first) retirement in 2015.
