Background

Despite an amazingly short amateur career that saw Tim Tszyu net a record of 33-1, he managed to become an Australian national champion in 2014. He also did decently elsewhere, managing to make it to the quarter finals or further of several domestic tournaments.

Tszyu is also the son of former Super Lightweight undisputed champion, Kostya Tszyu. He turned professional in 2016.

Accomplishments

Tim Tszyu initially started his career off as a Middleweight where he found success and remained unbeaten, but he transitioned towards fighting at Junior Middleweight once opportunities came knocking to win some regional or minor tiles.

He progressively proved himself to be a better competitor with showcase wins over fighters such as Jeff Horn, Dennis Hogan and Terrell Gausha

By 2023, he was almost ready for his first world title shot against the undisputed Super Welterweight, Jermell Charlo, but would later be scheduled to face Tony Harrison for the interim WBO world title in March.

Tszyu would turn up to have one of the best performances against a fighter that was arguably than whoever he had faced before. In a match he largely dominated, Tim Tszyu eventually stopped Harrison in the 9th round of their 12-round fight, and became the WBO interim champion of the division in the process.

In preparation for an eventual fight with Jermell Charlo, Tim Tszyu took up another fight in 2023. On June 18th he faced former Welterweight world title challenger Carlos Ocampo, and put up a tremendous performance when he defeated the Mexican contender by KO in just the 1st round.

Due to circumstances that delayed Tim Tszyu of a world title opportunity against former WBO champion Brian Castano and undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo, Tszyu became a world champion for the first time of his career after being promoted to WBO world champion on September 30th.

On October 15th, he was in involved in his first title defense against American WBC interim champion Brian Mendoza, and came out on top through a unanimous decision.

Boxing Style

tim tszyu boxing style

The orthodox-stanced fighter adopts a classic pressure style of boxing. He is skilled at cutting off the ring, punching hard and accurately, and he has shown a fair amount of skill which allows him to efficiently fight as a counterpuncher when needed.

Tim Tszyu seems most effective in the pocket but appears to be gradually improving at fighting on the outside. He has shown some chinks in his armor when it comes to defense, but seems well-capable of overcoming his shortcomings through his admirable work ethic and the ring and immense stamina reserves.
