Irish undisputed 140-pound Katie Taylor has retained all four of her super lightweight titles in her third overall contest with Puerto Rican challenger Amanda Serrano. The two fighters headlined an all-female card under the Most Valuable Promotions banner and were featured at the Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday, June 11.
Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano
Katie Taylor (25-1, 6 KO’s) defended her super lightweight (140 lbs) titles for the second time against Amanda Serrano (47-4-1, 31 KO’s) since their last bout held in November last year.
The third contest between them proved evenly-matched again, but was more slow-paced than their previous two bouts. Boxing at range to avoid head clashes she had complained about prior, Serrano sought to keep her distance this time to avoid Taylor’s swarmer-style which emphasized a volume of punches.
However, Taylor’s approach also differed as she focused more on lateral movement and counters to get ahead. Many of the rounds were close as a result, with Serrano racking up the punch stats through her jabs ― throwing twice as much as Taylor. Though her total amount of punches thrown were dwarfed by Serrano’s, Taylor landed as many punches as her Puerto Rican opponent; showing her efficiency.

Following the end of the 10th round, the judges decided in favor of Taylor who won a majority decision (MD) through two of the judges’ scorecards of 97-93, while a third judge scored the fight a draw through their 95-95 score.
With the trilogy bout concluded, both fighters appear free to move on with their respective careers that have been defined by the three fights held against each other.
Co-main event & undercard fights
The all-female card displayed a star-studded complement of fighters and featured more than a dozen world titles on the line:
- American undisputed super featherweight (130 lbs) champion Alycia Baumgardner (16-1, 7 KO’s) successfully defended all her titles against Spanish challenger Jennifer Miranda (12-1, 1 KO’s), carving out a prevalent unanimous decision (UD) win to remain undisputed.
- At super middleweight (168 lbs), British IBF champion Savannah Marshall (13-2, 10 KO’s) and American WBC champion Shadasia Green (16-1, 11 KO’s) clashed in a closely-contested unification fight. The fight appeared to be in Marshall’s favor after Green was docked points in the 4th round for excessive holding, though her efforts in the subsequent rounds allowed her to not arguably get ahead on the scorecards.
With both fighters appearing to throw and land equally, there was not much to separate them as Green would be declared the winner by split-decision (SD) after netting scores of 95-94 and 96-93, while herself Marshall received a lone score of 96-93.
Now one of two unified champions in the 168-pound division, an undisputed clash between Green and WBA & WBO titleholder Franchon-Crews Dezurn (10-2, 2 KO’s) ― also from the United States ― seems inevitable.
- The most dominant win came through British unified [WBO & IBF] super bantamweight (122 lbs) champion Ellie Scotney (11-0, 0 KO’s) who faced Mexican WBC champion Yamileth Mercado (24-4, 5 KO’s) in one out of three unification matches held on the card. Scotney won fairly easily, beating Mercado over 10 rounds by UD through scores of 100-90, and 98-92 twice.
- At bantamweight (118 lbs), Australian WBA champion Cherneka Johnson (18-2, 8 KO’s) and American IBF beltholder Shuretta Metcalf (14-5-1, 2 KO’s) found themselves in an undisputed fight after the vacant WBC and WBO titles were made available for the fight after Dina Thorslund vacated both titles.
Johnson won the match handily by technical knockout (TKO), stopping Metcalf in the 9th round of their 10-round fight to become the new undisputed champion of the 118 lbs division.
- A second match 140-pound match saw Chantelle Cameron (21-1, 8 KO’s) successfully defend her WBC interim title against former lightweight title challenger Jessica Camara (14-5-1, 3 KO’s) from Canada, leaving the room open for a third potential bout against Katie Taylor ― with the two currently split between a loss and a win.
