Background

Artur Beterbiev was an accomplished amateur boxer while he fought in the Cruiserweight (Heavyweight in amateurs) division. He won several prominent Gold titles during this period and other than final wins he did remarkably well by reaching the semi-final and the final rounds of international and national competitions.

His first notable competition win came in 2006 when he won the European Championships, and he continued on to win it again in 2010. He won Silver at the World Championships in 2007, and two years later in Milan he won the entire tournament.

After qualifying for the 2012 Olympics he beat Michael Hunter to progress to the quarter-final where he faced defeat against future Undisputed Cruiserweight and Unified Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk who he had lost to earlier in 2011 at the AIBA World Championships

Accomplishments

Artur Beterbiev became a professional in 2013 and started in the Light-Heavyweight division, a division that was lower than when he was in the amateurs. Beterbiev almost immediately went on to build his reputation as a feared knockout power, managing to knockout or stop every opponent he faced so far.

He won the WBA-NABA title in 2014 in his sixth match. In his next bout he won the IBF North American and WBO-NABO titles.

It did not take long for Artur Beterbiev to win his first world titles after winning and defending his mid-tier titles. He challenged for the IBF World Light-Heavyweight title in 2017, knocking out his opponent – Enrico Kölling – in the last (twelfth) round of their fight.

He collected his next world title (WBC World Light Heavyweight) in 2019 after a unification match with Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Gvodzyk. The unification bout proved to be another successful stoppage win as he won the WBC world title to become a unified champion for the first time in his career.

Artur Beterbiev unified a second time three years later when he faced WBO champion Joe Smith Jr. on June 18th in 2022. Beterbiev shocked everyone by stopping a credible opponent in Joe Smith Jr. within just two rounds. As a result, Beterbiev earned himself another title with the WBO world Light-Heavyweight belt.

On January 28th in 2023, Beterbiev fought a worthy challenger in Anthony Yarde. The two went at each other for 8 rounds before Beterbiev stopped Yarde after a tough but entertaining spectacle which saw him continue his stoppage/knockout streak.

Artur Beterbiev fought British contender Callum Smith a year later and coursed to a 7th-round technical knockout win over Smith to retain all his three world titles.

Boxing Style

artur beterbiev boxing style

Artur Beterbiev is mostly known for his extraordinary punching power that saw him taking out every opponent he’s ever faced. He’s an expert at driving his opponents to the ropes and then picking them open with clever feints and jabs to allow his powerful hooks to pass through his opponent’s guard. He’s also very competent at other offensive aspects, being capable of switching stances to further pressure opponents when moving forward.

While defensively he hasn’t shown much, offensively he has made up for it by fighting mostly on the front foot with a lot of pressure, also indicating that his stamina has reached unprecedented peaks due to him being able to keep around the same amount of pressure even in later rounds.

Beterbiev’s style of boxing can best be described as a Swarmer-style of boxing as he is often aggressive and assertive and prone to applying great pressure to his opponents.
