Background

Katie Taylor not only became one of Republic of Ireland’s best female amateur boxing prospects, but also became the most decorated Irish amateur boxer overall with the many accolades and achievements during her amateur career that seemed to span around a decade.

She has won the European Games, European Championships, EU Championships and the World Championships several times, an unmatched achievement so far in both women’s and men’s boxing. Though her most noteworthy accomplishment remains winning gold at the 2012 Olympics, Katie Taylor has fulfilled a lifetime career with the other prizes that she won in aforementioned competitions.

Taylor fought 187 times during her professional career, managing to win 175 times. After a lengthy illustrious amateur career, Taylor entered the professional ranks of boxing in 2016.

Accomplishments

Similar to her amateur career, Katie Taylor would – in time – become as decorated as a professional. Having remained unbeaten throughout her career, Katie Taylor has faced many top contenders or champions and managed to dispatch them all. Just some of these fighters include notable names such as Delfine Persoon, Jessica McCaskill, Natasha Jonas, Christina Linardatou, and Amanda Serrano.

Taylor won her first world title in her seventh fight – a year after her debut, beating Anahi Ester Sanchez to conquer the WBA Lightweight title. Further success followed two matches later when she beat Victoria Bustos in 2018 to capture the IBF Lightweight title. She won the WBO world title a year later.

Testing the boundaries of her abilities, she briefly moved up to Junior Welterweight where she succesfully challenged Linardatou for her WBO title, winning by unanimous decision. Despite her move to Junior Welterweight, she eventually settled in the Lightweight division where she would continue to defend her titles a total of 13 times, which is still an unbroken record in the women’s Lightweight division.

During her career as a champion she faced numerous challenges, but her most arduous yet impressive victories were the ones against Delfine Persoon and Amanda Serrano who she – respectively – scored a majority decision win and a split decision win against.

On May 20th, Katie Taylor moved up a division to face Chantelle Cameron for her Super Lightweight titles after originally being set to face Amanda Serrano (who was forced to pull out due to injury). Facing a tough and proven fighter in her prime, Taylor failed to grab a victory in her first ever match held in her home city of Dublin and eventually lost to Cameron by majority decision, culminating in Taylor suffering her first professional career loss.

The two fighters re-matched on November 25th, and Taylor revenged her loss, defeating Cameron by majority decision to win all of Cameron’s super lightweight titles, thereby becoming undisputed for the second time of her career.

Boxing Style

katie taylor boxing style

Katie Taylor fights from the Orthodox stance, and has excelled through her fast punching speed, her ability to box both inside and outside, and her defensive capabilities. She has shown the ability to be able to adapt depending on who she fights, and earlier through her career built herself a strong reputation as a pressure fighter. She has always been more than that however, and since her time as an amateur she has shown a high proficiency over her footwork, angles, positioning, movement of body & head, and she’s also displayed high-level ring IQ.

Most recently however, she has finetuned her boxing skills, using all the skills she learned from her amateur days to create a style that allows her to counter, pressure, and box her opponents depending on the situation. Her defensive skills ahve seen the most improvement throughout her career, as she already was accomplished in most of the other fundamentals in boxing. As a result of her increased defense, she has shown the ability to be as effective on the back foot, as she was on the front foot, thus leading to her rightfully placing herself at the top of the pound-for-pound list for female boxers.
