Background
Mikaela Mayer was one of the most decorated American amateurs in women’s boxing, managing to win a plethora of competitions during her career. Some of her accomplishments include becoming the USA National Boxing Champion three times in a row in from 2014 to 2016. She also won the Golden Gloves competition twice in 2011 and 2014.
Mayer further won bronze at the World Boxing Championships in 2012, and in 2016 she participated in the Rio Olympics to eventually reach the quarter-final of the tournament, though she ended up losing by a close majority decision.
In 2017, Mikaela Mayer turned pro after making her debut on the 5th of August.
Accomplishments
Mikaela Mayer initially fought as a Lightweight during her earlier pro career. By the time she won her first (mid-tier) title in 2018, Mayer had moved down to Super Featherweight where she has arguably found the most success as a professional.
Her first world title opportunity came in 2020 against Ewa Brodnicka who she confidently beat by UD to claim the WBO Super Featherweight world title. After a successful defense of her title in the summer of 2021, Mayer unified her WBO title with the IBF and The Ring titles against French world champion Maiva Hamadouche.
In 2022 she faced another American in Jennifer Han in another successful defense of her titles, and later that same year in November, a unification match was scheduled with fellow American Alycia Baumgardner who then held the WBO world title.
Though Mayer suffered a controversial split-decision loss, she put up a good performance that mitigated the fallout of her controversial unification loss to Baumgardner.
She proved herself once more on April 15th in 2023 when she defeated short-notice contender Lucy Wildheart ― who filled in for Mayer’s original opponent, Christina Linardatou ― by unanimous decision to win the WBC Lightweight interim title.
Without her able to challenge the undisputed lightweight champion in Katie Taylor, Mayer opted to move up instead, fighting once at 140 lbs where she tested herself against Italian veteran Silvia Bortot in September 2023 to subseqently win every round.
Mikaela Mayer moved up to welterweight where a chance awaited her to become a two-weight champion against IBF welterweight champion Natasha Jonas. Mayer did not manage to win however, narrowly (and again controversially) losing to Jonas by split-decision on January 20th in 2024.
Boxing Style
Mikaela Mayer fights out of the Orthodox stance. She is a fluid and smart boxer that often looks to box her opponents from the outside while controlling the ring. Her excellent timing and ability to react has also turned her into a capable counterpuncher, and she has often shown proved to be a danger in that regard with her reach. Though not an expert on fighting inside, Mayer has shown the ability to fight on the back foot, and use everything at her disposal to move outside of the pocket and remain just out of range to land her punches, while avoiding that of her opponent.
