The match between Terri Harper and Cecilia Brækhus, originally set for May 20th on the undercard of Taylor-Cameron I, fell through due to an illness suffered by Brækhus but has now been revived and scheduled for the undercard of Wood-Warrington, which will take place on October 7th at the Sheffield Arena
Both fighters will gain significant traction if they come through with a victory. WBA super welterweight champion Terri Harper (14-1-1, 6 KO’s) will face a former pound-for-pound champion in Cecilia Brækhus (37-2, 9 KO’s) who had a long reign as the undisputed women’s welterweight champion until her fateful loss to Jessica McCaskill (12-3, 5 KO’s).
As a legend in the sport, Brækhus, currently 41 years old, could have chosen to retire following her losses to McCaskill, but instead, she is aiming to become a two-division world champion after her dominant tenure as a welterweight champion. At 154 lbs, Terri Harper is currently the best opponent to face for Cecilia Brækhus given her status as a world champion.
The winner between the two will either retain or win the WBA super welterweight title, and the vacant WBO title will also be up for grabs. Though Natasha Jonas (14-2-1, 9 KO’s) had been in possession of the WBO title since February of 2022, her decision to fight at welterweight last month has apparently cost her. Despite no official announcement being made, the WBO has stripped Natasha Jonas of her WBO title at some point after her last match until recently.
Though Natasha Jonas is still officially regarded as the WBC and IBF champion of 154 lbs, the WBO’s decision to strip her may prove to be a catalyst for the other sanctioning bodies to do the same. Jonas’ current status in the division is unclear as she is currently regarded as the IBF welterweight champion following her July bout against Kandi Wyatt (11-5, 3 KO’s). As per the rules of various sanctioning bodies, a fighter is not allowed to hold world titles in two different divisions simultaneously.
