Adrien Broner and Blair Cobbs have been confirmed to be fighting on June 7th at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Reports from earlier this week had suggested this fight was in the making, but an official press conference ensued yesterday on May 16th announcing the card that will be headlined by Broner and Cobbs. The event will be promoted by Don King Promotions.
After several years of being out of the spotlight, 92-year old Don King seems to be slowly climbing up the promotional ladder with the upcoming June 7th non-title welterweight bout between Adrien Broner (35-4-1, 24 KO’s) and Blair Cobbs set to headline the best card Don King has put on in several years.
The upcoming boxing show is not only of interest due to arguably two of [American] boxing’s most entertaining boxers in Broner and Cobbs stepping into the ring in little over a month―with their introductory press conference yesterday not disappointing in this department, but the card has further been stacked with more prominent fights than initially anticipated.
This is evident by the presence of Michael Hunter (22-1-2, 16 KO’s) on the card; a former decorated amateur prospect and notable heavyweight contender who will be fighting a fellow American and decent contender in Cassius Chaney (23-1, 16 KO’s), with the [vacant] WBA interim heavyweight title and a full 12 rounds set for their match―suggesting their fight might become significant to contributing to the American heavyweight landscape as a whole.
On the same card, an actual world title fight will occur as Norair Mikaeljan (27-2, 12 KO’s)―also known as Noel Gevor―is set to make the first defense of his WBC cruiserweight title against top-rated Canadian contender Ryan Rozicki (20-1, 19 KO’s); arguably making it one of the most important bouts to occur in the 200 lbs division this year.
Former cruiserweight world champion Yuniel Dorticos is also set to return on June 7th.
American middleweight contender Ian Green (18-2, 12 KO’s) will also make an appearance on the undercard, and a women’s 130 lbs bout between top-rated Greek contender Kalliopi Kourouni (17-3-1, 7 KO’s) and former unified world champion Edith Soledad Matthysse (18-16-1, 1 KO’s) is further set to transpire on June 7th.
Overall, the fights on the upcoming card help embellish Don King’s event as one of the more relevant in recent years, with the headlining fight between Adrien Broner and Blair Cobbs both set to be an entertaining and competitive fight that may further entice the prospect of notable American fighters stepping into the ring against each other more often―matchups that enabled Don King to rise to fame decades ago.
