Accomplishments

Povetkin’s first world title was the WBA (Regular) world Heavyweight title which he won in 2011 against Ruslan Chagaev. He retained the title for two years before losing it in a unification fight to Wladimir Klitschko in 2013 who held the WBA (super) title – amongst other titles.

He recovered quickly after his UD loss against Klitschko, and a year later in 2015 he won both the WBC Silver and WBC International Heavyweight titles against reputable Heavyweights Carlos Takam and Manuel Charr.

Two years later Povetkin continued to find success, winning the WBA Continental (Europe) and WBO International Heavyweight titles against Ukrainian Andriy Rudenko. He further won the WBA Inter-Continental Heavyweight title against Romanian Christian Hammer. After winning and retaining his titles against British Heavyweight vet David Price, he earned his opportunity for a world title against Anthony Joshua on 22 September, 2018. The result culminated in a TKO loss in the 7th round for Povetkin, but he picked himself up soon against Hughie Fury a year later in August where he won the vacant WBA International Heavyweight title.

After a draw with former Cruiserweight contender Michael Hunter, Povetkin found himself matched up with Dillian Whyte to fight for the interim version of the WBC World Heavyweight belt. The fight resulted in a surprising Povetkin win who was rated as the underdog by bookmakers. His 5th round TKO win saw him net the WBC Interim World Heavyweight belt but he lost it in his rematch with Dillian Whyte in March 2021.

Povetkin’s career facing a multitiude of top-rated Heavyweights and multiple opportunities for world titles has propelled him to remain a top 15 ranked fighter for the majority of his career. Even in his 40’s, Povetkin was still regarded as a dangerous boxer, as evident by his win against Dillian Whyte in 2020.

After a notable and accomplished professional career, Povetkin retired from the sport following his KO loss to Dillian Whyte in 2021 in their rematch.

Boxing Style

alexander povetkin boxing style

Povetkin is known as a pressure fighter, often going on the inside and unleashing long hooks when in position. His most dangerous weapon is an overhand hooks, which are sometimes utilized in effective counters where he manages to slip inside before unleashing his hooks. He also tends to be crafty and uses his jab well to hide his overhand right. In the ring, he has also displayed the ability to control the ring on countless occasions, proving that aside from being strong and skilled, he can also be smart.
