Background
With an amateur record of 97-20, Caleb Plant proved himself to be a future world with pivotal competition wins that saw him become a Golden Gloves champion in 2011, a finalist in 2013. He also nearly became a national champion in 2010, and was picked to be an alternate for the 2012 Olympics.
Plant became a full-fledged professional on May 10th of 2014.
Accomplishments
Since first making his debut as a Super Middleweight, Plant has continued to campaign successfully in the division which saw him maintain an unbeaten winning streak for nearly a decade.
Thoroughly developed in the amateurs and further sharpened as a professional, Caleb Plant never won a mid- or low-tier title before he had his first opportunity for a world title against Jose Uzcategui in 2019, earning him the IBF Super Middleweight title in the process.
He retained his title three times from 2019 up to November of 2021 when he lost it in an undisputed match against Canelo Alvarez. A confident and dominant performance against Anthony Dirrell saw Plant soon get back into title contention in 2022.
He was thereafter scheduled to face David Benavidez for the WBC Interim title on March 25th in 2023 in a heated match that may determine the future world, unified or undisputed champion at 168 lbs.
Unfortunately, the former IBF world champion stumbled to a UD loss against Benavidez, which counted for the second loss of his career.
Boxing Style
As his monniker ‘Sweethands’ suggests, Caleb Plant is known for his quick hands and feet, as well as his accuracy. He is a good fighter when at range, and has been known to pick apart opponents from a distance when the opportunity presents itself.
Though not known as a power puncher, there has been significant improvement in the manner in which he sits down on his punches as opposed to earlier in his career.
His match with Canelo Alvarez has perhaps done not done him justice when it comes to his skills, as he had seemingly been outboxing Alvarez before ending up being stopped by the Mexican fighter.
