Background

Callum SMith was one of the best British prospects to compete the amateur equivalent of the Super Middleweight division. He was successful as both a junior and senior competitor and has listed several gold medals amongst his accomplishments through competing at national tournaments.

Smith was a hairbreadth away from competing in the 2012 Olympics, but struggled to make it past the semi-finals of the Olympic qualifying tournament.

He turned professional not long after, making his pro debut in November, 2012.

Accomplishments

Callum Smith’s stint as a Super Middleweight saw him maintain an unbeaten career for over six years. In the course of his undefeated run, he became a world champion after participating in the WBSS and beating George Groves in the finals to become a WBA (Super) and The Ring champion in 2018.

Though his earlier years went fairly unnoticed, he noticeably drew some attention when he beat Rocky Fielding on course winning his first British Super Middleweight title in 2015.

He defended his titles twice – beating viable contenders in former Middleweight world champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and John Ryder – in 2019. In 2020, he met with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in a unification bout where the vacant WBC world title was on the line. In what would become the first loss of his career, Smith would lose his match to Canelo Alvarez by unanimous decision.

He has since then moved up to Light-Heavyweight where he has shown himself to be in tip-top form from 2021 and onwards by knocking out his next two opponents in Lenin Castillo and Mathieu Bauderlique – two decent fighters who were relatively young and in their prime, and well-regarded as prospects in their amateur days.

In January of 2024, Callum Smith faced Artur Beterbiev for his WBC, WBO and IBF light-heavyweight titles but was unable to prevent himself from becoming Beterbiev’s twentieth opponent to be KO’ed as he suffered a technical knockout loss to the Russian-Canadian.

Boxing Style

Having dealt with a reach and height advantage for most of his professional career, Callum Smith looks to box from the outside where he can just his jab to best effect. Though struggling to deal with opponents who are much more adept at fighting inside the pocket – as evident through his fight with Canelo Alvarez, Smith has improved as of recently to be effective at every possible range.
