Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KO’s) and William Scull (23-0, 9 KO’s) will be meeting in the ring to decide the undisputed champion of the super middleweight (168 lbs) as confirmed by the launch press conference held on Thursday, March 2nd. The two will be the headliners of a Riyadh Season card that will be staged in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the Venue Riyadh Season.
Alvarez currently still has a hold onto the WBA, WBC and WBO titles which will be put on the line when he faces Scull ― whose own IBF belt will also be up for grabs.
Despite the historic nature of the second undisputed 168 lbs match occurring since Canelo Alvarez faced Caleb Plant (23-2, 14 KO’s) in 2021, there is a notable gap in ability and experience between two fighters that makes it more of a formality for Scull to win. This only further supported by expectations of Alvarez facing Terence Crawford in September.
Scull, 32, hails from Cuba but is based in Germany. After Alvarez was forced to vacate his IBF title in lieu of opting to face Edgar Berlanga rather than IBF-mandated opponent Scull, the Cuban fighter would end up fighting Russian contender Vladimir Shishkin in a controversial fight that notably implicated the German boxing commission in favoriting Scull.
This bias would primarily be reflected through the result of the October 19th match last year between Scull and Shishkin which arguably saw the Russian fighter do enough in the ring to warrant a victory.
Combined with the lack of viable opponents on his resume other than Shishkin, William Scull will be going into his match with Canelo Alvarez as a steep underdog as he faces the nigh-insurmountable task of becoming undisputed against the seasoned Mexican champion.
