Background
Gervonta Davis established himself as one of the best American prospects with his record of 205-15 as an amateur boxer. During his amateur career, he became a three-time Silver Gloves champion. He also became a Golden Gloves champion in 2012, and also won the Police Athletic League competition at least twice.
Davis turned professional in 2013.
Accomplishments
Gervonta Davis started his professional career as a Featherweight, but also tested himself at Lightweight regularly. He received an opportunity for a world title four years after his debut when he faced then-IBF champion Jose Pedraza in 2017 at 130 lbs while still undefeated. His bout with Pedraza resulted in a TKO victory for him and his first world title.
After losing his IBF title due to missing weight, he quickly conquered another one – WBA (Super) – by stopping Jesus Cuellar early in the third round of their bout,in 2018. Following two more title defenses at 130 lbs, Davis decided to move up and face his next challenge.
He was immediately matched with former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa who gave him a proper match that went the distance, but unanimously in favor of Davis. As the fight was for the vacant WBA (Regular) Lightweight belt, Gervonta Davis also became a world champion in his first fight as a Lightweight.
His very next fight was against four-division world champion Leo Santa Cruz in 2022 who Davis knocked out in the sixth round to defend his WBA title, and win the WBA (Super) Junior Lightweight/Super Feathereight title for the second time of his career.
Davis briefly moved up to 140 lbs to face and beat Mario Barrios for the WBA (Regular) world title in 2021, before defending his WBA title at Lightweight against Isaac Cruz in the same year.
He retained his WBA (Regular) Lightweight title for the second time against undefeated American prospect Rolando Romero by stopping Romero in the sixth round in 2022.
Gervonta Davis’ legacy expanded in 2023 when – in the beginning of the year – he disposed of the undefeated Super Featherweight world champion Hector Garcia through a stoppage victory, and later he defeated long-time rival and fellow American contender Ryan Garcia on April 22nd by knockout.
In the early stages of 2024, Gervonta Davis would find himself promoted to WBA world champion without the “regular” distinction, and in June he would defend his title against fellow countryman and lightweight contender Frank Martin. Their contest would last for 8 rounds as Davis closed the show with a KO victory to retain his WBA world lightweight title for the first time.
Boxing Style
Often compared to Mike Tyson due to his explosiveness in combat, those comparisons were not drawn out of thin air given his abundantly-high KO record of around 92%. Gervonta Davis is more than a power puncher however; he is known to be one of the most dangerous counterpunchers in or around his weight class and his footwork has been well-developed to the point of it being considered elite. Davis is further known to have a good and solid jab which he used to great effect against those that would normally have a reach advantage.
Gervonta Davis is further well-capable of fighting on the backfoot, and he has demonstrated to still be lethal when fighting in this manner as his fights with Isaac Cruz and Rolando Romero have proved.
