Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KO’s) and Jake Paul (12-1, 7 KO’s) are aiming to corner the casual market of boxing by staging an exhibition bout against each other on Friday, November 14, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia ― with Netflix set to become the exclusive broadcaster of the upcoming card.
The news further puts to bed any chance of the highly-expected rematch between Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-2, 10 KO’s) from occurring this year.
The rematch was rumored to take place this month before Davis found himself jailed, destroying the possibility of the match occurring.
Davis and Paul have often exchanged unpleasantries on social media which is set to be exacerbated during the build-up of their fight.
The reason for the bout being an exhibition is attributed to the wide discrepancy between weight classes between the fighters, with Davis’ last fight occurring at lightweight (135 lbs) while Paul fought at cruiserweight (200 lbs).
Additionally, the fight confirms neither fighter are interested in being competitive in their own divisions, opting instead to choose the path of entertainment by utilizing their wide fan bases for what will clearly be a spectacle match.
For Jake Paul, it further reaffirms his questionable position in professional boxing having yet to face adequate opposition since debuting in 2020, and now having doubled-down on engaging in exhibitions during the prime of his career ― which is arguably a downgrade from one of his previous professional contests where he faced Mike Tyson.
Paul was in talks earlier to face Anthony Joshua but the potential bout was reportedly cancelled due to network disagreements according to The Ring.
In the case of the 30-year old Gervonta Davis, his involvement in the exhibition is less of a surprise given his stated intent to potentially retire in 2026 and the high-stakes rematch with Lamont Roach that he avoided after their controversial draw during their first bout on March 1st.
