Mexican former world champion Jaime Munguia and British former title challenger John Ryder are scheduled to face each other on January 27th next year. The Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona [USA] will host this non-title bout as its main event, set for twelve rounds.

The match-up seems to serve as a stay-busy fight for Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33 KO’s), with rumors suggesting a potential face-off against Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KO’s) during the Cinco de Mayo weekend next year. Munguia’s opponent, John Ryder (32-6, 18 KO’s), though credible, is coming off a unanimous decision (UD) loss to Alvarez and is not expected to be the favorite against the younger, powerful Mexican contender.

Notably, this match marks one of the first instances where a Golden Boy Promotions fighter (Munguia) and a Matchroom fighter (Ryder) will headline a non-title fight. Despite both promotions working with the same broadcaster, DAZN, their chairmen have had public disagreements, suggesting a potential change in the dynamic between Matchroom and Golden Boy and the likelihood of more such cross-promotional match-ups.

While it’s common for fighters from different promotions to face each other under specific circumstances, such as mandatory matches, this bout signifies a potential shift in collaboration between Matchroom and Golden Boy. Matchroom has previously worked with other promotions, like Sauerland Promotions, arranging several fights.

Although Munguia is the expected favorite, John Ryder aims to rebound from his loss to Canelo Alvarez on May 6th, where he fought with an injury (broken nose). Fully recovered, Ryder poses a threat to Munguia, given his commendable performance against Alvarez.

The fight between Jaime Munguia and John Ryder is set to take place at super middleweight. More details about the additional fights for the US-based card will be announced in the near future.
