Jaron Ennis is gaining massive plaudits for his 1st round technical knockout (TKO) win over Angolan-Portuguese fighter Uisma Lima, to the point that the Philadelphia 76ers NBA team even seems to believe that he is a two-division champion.
Honored by the 76ers during the build-up of their NBA regular season game against the Charlotte Hornets on October 25th, Ennis was labeled by the announcer as the “new WBC super welterweight champion” despite only winning the WBA interim super welterweight (154 lbs) title against Uisma Lima several weeks ago on October 11th.
Aside from his interim title, Jaron Ennis currently holds no legitimate world titles at 154 pounds but is known as the former unified champion of the welterweight (147 lbs) division, having held the IBF title for more than a year before winning the WBA title by beating its incumbent champion, Eimantas Stanionis, in a unification fight in April this year.
Jaron Ennis vacated his 147-pound titles to confirm his move up to his current weight class but has not yet secured an actual title fight. Despite persistent rumors of a fight with WBC interim champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. being next, the odds are likely the 28-year old Ennis will be pitted against German WBA 154 lbs champion Abass Baraou (17-1, 9 KO’s) due to his status as interim champion ― whether by a mandatory order from the WBA or a negotiated fight.
Baraou, 31, was only recently elevated to WBA world champion after the title’s previous holder, Terence Crawford, vacated his belt in lieu of keeping his newly-won titles at super middleweight (168 lbs).
