Mikaela Mayer has already distinguished herself as one of the best American female fighters of this era but appears to still have an appetite for more after netting three world titles at 154 pounds in a title fight against Canadian champion Mary Spencer on Thursday, October 30th.
The two fighters headlined Canada-based Eye of the Tiger Promotions event at the Montreal Casino in Montreal, Canada ― Spencer’s (10-3, 6 KO’s) home country ― where Mayer (22-2, 5 KO’s) oversaw a dominant unanimous decision (UD) win over the Canadian. Aside from Mary Spencer’s WBA super welterweight (154 lbs) title on the line, both competitors had further glory to gain with the vacant WBC and WBO titles on the line.
The fight appeared to be a mismatch from the opening bell with 40-year old Mary Spencer clearly struggling to match the pace and determination of Mikaela Mayer who was five years her junior.
Most of the bout occurred within the inside range, with both fighters seeking their luck up close but only Mayer succeeding with her physicality and ferociousness. While Spencer is known for her power, Mayer’s strategy to prevent the Canadian champion from gaining any steam worked out to perfection as it became a showcase for Mayer’s ability to fight on the inside.
Following 10-scheduled rounds, Mikaela Mayer was announced the winner by UD after a wipeout victory where Mary Spencer looked close to being stopped in the latter two rounds of the bout. Mayer also won Spencer’s WBA 154 lbs title and the vacant WBC and WBO titles to become the unified champion of the super welterweight division and a three-division champion following previous successful stints at super featherweight (130 lbs) and welterweight (147 lbs).
Now a champion at both 147 lbs and 154 lbs, a unique opportunity has emerged for Mikaela Mayer where she can go on to become undisputed at either two weight classes.
At welterweight, British unified champion Lauren Price (9-0, 2 KO’s) holds the WBA, WBC and IBF world titles but might not be immediately available due to her impending wedding.
At super welterweight, the only other champion remains American IBF champion Oshae Jones (9-0, 3 KO’s) who appears more readily available and completed her first title defense in July.
