American WBC super flyweight champion Jesse Rodriguez will continue on with Matchroom for the foreseeable future as the promotion announces that Rodriguez has extended his contract. While the full details regarding the extension have not been divulged, Rodriguez has likely signed a multi-fight deal that will tie him to Matchroom for at least 2025.
Jesse Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KO’s) is currently in possession of the WBC super flyweight (115 lbs) title which he attained this past June after defeating then-incumbent champion, Mexican stalwart Juan Francisco Estrada (44-4, 28 KO’s), by knockout (KO) in a highly-competitive fight.
Prior to defeating Estrada, Jesse Rodriguez competed in another tough title bout in December of last year against former IBF flyweight (112 lbs) champion Sunny Edwards (21-1, 4 KO’s), stopping his British opponent in the 9th round of their 12-round bout to unify his WBO 112 lbs title with Edwards’ IBF.
Rodriguez, 24, is now poised to face Mexican WBC interim champion [at 115 lbs] Pedro Guevara (42-4-1, 22 KO’s)―in a unification of the two versions of the WBC super flyweight title―on November 9.
Notably preceding this bout is Rodriguez’ extension with Matchroom who he has been with since 2022, marking a continuing and fruitful relationship between the two parties. Under the Matchroom umbrella, Rodriguez would go on to become a super flyweight world champion on his promotional debut roughly a month after signing with the promotion.
Rodriguez would go on to successfully defend his title twice before conquering the vacant WBO flyweight title which he would unify with Edwards’ IBF title in his very next bout.
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez is also regarded as the seventh best pound-for-pound contender according to The Ring and further occupies the #1 spot as the best super flyweight in the world according to the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board (TBRB).
The next step for Rodriguez appears to be undisputed as he would go on to reveal during an interview with Matchroom Boxing:
“At one point no-one wanted to sign me,” Rodriguez told Matchroom. “Eddie [Hearn] gave me an opportunity to fight on his card in Fresno, and by the next fight I was signed to Matchroom and that was the Carlos Cuadras fight, and from that point, my life has changed.
“Loyalty is everything in boxing, if it’s not there, you don’t have anything. Eddie gave me the opportunity and I know that he’s looking out for me, and that’s why I feel at home at Matchroom.
“I have to get past this fight first, but the goal is to go for undisputed in 2025. I’m taking this fight as seriously as ever, training my ass off like any other fight, we’re going to handle business and then we can talk about 2025.”
Still unbeaten, Rodriguez will be hoping to maintain his record against the 35-year old Pedro Guevara who himself has been a world champion at junior flyweight (108 lbs) and challenged for world titles several times following his tenure as a champion.
