Background
Marie-Eve Dicaire had a different start to her career than most other female boxers, having started in karate rather than boxing in her youth, and competing as an amateur in karate competitions where she reportedly won a plethora of titles. Later in life at the age of 24, Dicaire switched to boxing and further won several trophies during an amateur career of approximately 50 bouts. [1]
In 2015 Marie-Eve Dicaire, turned professional fairly late at the age of 29.
Accomplishments
Marie-Eve Dicaire proved to be a fearless and talented competitor as she fought in the Super Welterweight/Junior Middleweight division. After around a dozen fights, she won her first (international) title in 2018.
Dicaire maintained an unbeaten record during the same year and on December 1st she fought and won against then-world champion Chris Namús to earn the IBF Junior Middleweight world title. Dicaire went on to defend her title three times successfully, until she was matched up against Claressa Shields in 2021 in an Undisputed bout, suffering the first loss of her career when she was defeated by unanimous decision.
Success followed quickly after her loss, and after batlling for the IBF world title once more – left vacant after Shields moved down – against Cynthia Lozano she managed to win it again by knocking her opponent out cold in the 7th round. The knockout would be recorded as the first finish of her career.
As the IBF’s champion, Marie-Eve Dicaire fought in a unification bout with WBC and WBO champion Natasha Jonas on the 12th of November in 2022. Dicaire lost her IBF title in the subsequent fight with Jonas – who won by unanimous decision, and Dicaire suffered her second career loss overall.
Boxing Style
Marie-Eve Dicaire is a southpaw and has developed a style as an out-boxer. As a result she has shown above-average footwork that allows her to move around the ring quickly, and a lethal jab that she has used to throw off many of her opponents. She is also a capable counterpuncher as her style warrants. Though she doesn’t seem to have or use the same power as her peers, Marie-Eve Dicaire can overwhelm opponents with her ring IQ, technical skills and speed of both her hands and feet.
