Mikaela Mayer FINALLY Gets World Title Opportunity In The US Again With Sandy Ryan Fight On September 27

Mikaela Mayer FINALLY Gets World Title Opportunity In The US Again With Sandy Ryan Fight On September 27 featured image
Sandy Ryan will be defending her WBO welterweight title for the 3rd time of her career as she faces former unified champion Mikalea Mayer on September 27 at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City, New York.

Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan have officially been confirmed to be fighting on September 27th at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City, New York. The bout will see Ryan defend her WBO welterweight title against Mayer in her second-ever fight within the United States. Top Rank, with whom Mayer is signed, will be the official promoter of the September 27th show, which will see both fighters headline the New York card.

Mikaela Mayer (19-2, 5 KOs) last fought in the United States in 2022 when she successfully defended her WBO and IBF super featherweight (130 lbs) titles over countrywoman Jennifer Han. Subsequently, however, Mayer went on to fight a whopping four times in the United Kingdom, losing two out of four matches and only managing to attain the WBC interim lightweight (135 lbs) title during this period.

Against Sandy Ryan (7-1-1, 3 KOs), Mayer will receive her second chance in a row to become a world champion. Her last fight also occurred in the welterweight (147 lbs) division and saw Mayer controversially lose to IBF champion Natasha Jonas (15-2-1, 9 KOs) by split decision.

Sandy Ryan is, to her credit, taking a big challenge facing a top-rated contender in Mikaela Mayer. Ryan is coming off a stoppage win over fellow Brit Terri Harper (14-2-2, 6 KOs) in March. With Mayer’s credentials as a former unified world champion and ability, Ryan might be facing the toughest opponent she has ever faced next to Jessica McCaskill (12-4-1, 5 KOs) and is taking an enormous risk for only a title defense.

What is certain is that both fighters are set to distinguish themselves if they come out on top, with a likely opportunity to establish themselves as pound-for-pound (P4P) fighters while furthering their reputation and prospects to gain more opportunities in the near future. Mayer is currently rated at #10 by The Ring Boxing Magazine for the women’s P4P rankings.
