Background

In 2010, Paul Butler won the ABA Championships, after failing to secure a gold medal by losing in 2007 in the final to future Super Flyweight world champion Khalid Yafai. He was also a quarter-finalist in the Commonwealth Amateur Boxing Championships, and was known to compete internationally as a member of Team Britain alongside other prospects such as Savannah Marshall, Leigh Wood and Natasha Jonas.

Accomplishments

Paul Butler made is professional debut in 2010, nearly half a year after winning the ABA Championships as an amateur. Butler initially started out as a Junior Featherweight/Super Bantamweight, but also tested his bounds as a Bantamweight, a Flyweight and eventually a Super Flyweight – managing to win his first (British) title as the latter.

The four years following his debut was one of steady growth and decent success as he would go on to remain undefeated while winning several non-world titles. In 2015, Paul Butler faced Zolani Tete for the IBF world title at Super Flyweight. Unfortunately, Paul Butler was only faced with disappointment as he was stopped in the eight round.

Showing his determination, Butler came back with another winning streak – winning three mid-tier titles alongside his wins – before facing Emmanuel Rodriguez in his second attempt to gain a world title in 2018 at Bantamweight. He again fell, this time by unanimous decision.

It took him another four years to conquer his first world title when his third world title fight came in 2022 against Jonas Sultan for the vacant WBO interim Bantamweight title. He successfully won against Sultan through a unanimous decision by the judges, thereby helping him to conquer his first interim world title and placing him closer towards becoming a full world champion.

A few weeks after becoming the interim champion for the WBO, Paul Butler was promoted to full WBO world champion after John Riel Casimero was stripped of the belt. A match to not only unify but become undisputed against pound-for-pound boxer Naoya Inoue was arranged for December 13th in 2022. Butler wasn’t a match for Inoue on the day and eventually lost by knockout to the Japanese Bantamweight, losing his WBO title as a result.

Boxing Style

Paul Butler fights out of the orthodox fighter and looks to outbox his opponents if necessary. Though he has employed a form where he pressures his opponents on the inside earlier in his career, he seems to have focused on being more effective barely inside the range of his opponent, and combined with the skills he’s developed as an amateur he has become one of the more dangerous out-boxers in the lower divisions.
