Gervonta Davis seems set to defend his title against WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. after the WBA granted Roach an exception to face Davis come December. While Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) has yet to announce a show for December 14, rumors have been swirling surrounding Davis making his return to the ring at the end of this year.

The WBA applied several conditions to Lamont Roach’s (25-1-1, 10 KO’s) potential move up towards the lightweight (135 lbs) division where he intents to challenge incumbent WBA 135 lbs champion Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KO’s).

The first condition is that, in the case of a Roach win over Davis, he would have 5 days to decide to abandon either his WBA super featherweight (130 lbs) title or 135 lbs title.

The second condition would activate if Roach lost to Davis, which would require him to arrange a fight with WBA mandatory challenger at 130 lbs, Russian contender Albert Batyrgaziev (11-0, 8 KO’s)―currently ranked #1 in the WBA’s super featherweight rankings.

If Gervonta Davis were to fight Lamont Roach, this would be the second time in his career as a lightweight he would face a WBA 130 lbs champion that moved up. He previously fought Dominican champion Hector Luis Garcia (16-2, 10 KO’s) in 2023, who had then held the WBA super featherweight title and moved up to [unsuccessfully] challenge Davis for his WBA “regular” 135 lbs title. Garcia would later be defeated by Roach in November of 2023―resulting in the loss of his WBA 130 lbs title which, since then, has been in Roach’s hands.

PBC has yet to announce the upcoming Davis-Roach card but this will be presumably revealed either this week or the next following the WBA’s confirmation of the headlining bout. The only event currently lined up in the PBC schedule is the upcoming Batyrgaziev-Tszyu card set to be held on October 12.
