Background
Devin Haney’s amateur career was not devoid of any significant medals, as he won seven national titles, placed high in tournaments such as the USA Junior National Championships and the World Junior Championships, as well as breaking the record of the Youth World Championships to become the youngest boxer to win it at 17.
He compiled a record of 138-8, losing twice to future WBC Lightweight interim champion Ryan Garcia, who he also beat twice in turn. He also faced prospects such as Nikita Abayi. Devin Haney turned professional in 2015.
Accomplishments
Starting and still remaining in the Lightweight division, Devin Haney has so far managed to retain his unbeaten status. He made his name as a dangerous American prospect over a course of around twenty fights in which he won several mid-tier titles.
In September of 2019, Haney became an interim world champion following his decision win over Zaur Abdullaev. He was officially promoted to full champion a month later when Vasyl Lomachenko became a ‘franchise champion’ of the WBC.
Devin Haney successfully defended his world title four times over the next two years – beating the likes of Jorge Linares and Joseph Diaz in the process – before facing George Kambosos Jr. in an undisputed Lightweight match on June 5th in 2022.
Haney came out victorious against Kambosos Jr. through a unanimous decision, ultimately becoming the Lightweight division’s best fighter when he won all the available belts including the The Ring’s lineal title.
That same year he faced Kambosos Jr. in a rematch on October 16, successfully defended his newly-gained titles, beating Kambosos Jr. for the second time in a row by UD under wider score margins.
On May 20th, Devin Haney defended all his titles as the undisputed champion of the Lightweight division for the second time of his career against the highly-renowned Vasyl Lomachenko.
The two went head-to-head in a tight contest that was eventually ruled as a unanimous decision for Devin Haney, allowing him to retain his unbeaten record over a perennial contender in Lomachenko.
On December 9th in 2023, Haney faced WBC super lightweight champion Regis Prograis for his title and cruised to a dominant UD victory to claim his first world title at 140 lbs.
Boxing Style
Dubbed as ‘The Dream’, Devin Haney employs an orthodox stance that he uses to frequently box from the outside. He is one of the most well-rounded boxers of his era – which is an impressive feat given his age – and is best known for employing a defensive yet agile counterattacking style of when he’s not boxing from the outside.
Haney is well-capable at keeping his opponent at range, due to his expert footwork, but he can also fight on the inside when needed. He combines his counterattacking and pure boxing style of fighting with a varied range of combinations, that almost always proves to be effective and lethal to the opponent. His ring IQ has also been very well-developed as a result, as he seeks to mitigate any disadvantage he may have (ex. when fighting Southpaws), or take advantage when the opportunity presents itself (e.g. by utilizing his jab to the fullest extent due to his longer-than-average reach).
