Sunny Edwards retained his IBF Flyweight title against Felix Alvarado at the Sheffield Arena on November 11th.

British Flyweight champion Sunny Edwards (19-0, 4 KO’s) won in a tough matchup with Nicaraguan challenger Felix Alvarado (38-3, 33 KO’s) at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK. Edwards proved to be the victor by unanimous decision after judges scored the fight 115-113 twice, and 116-112 in his favor.

Felix Alvarado is primarily known as a pressure fighter, and he didn’t change his approach during his match with Edwards. While Sunny Edwards is more known as an out-boxer or pure boxer, the British fighter adapted accordingly and switched seamlessly between defense and offense to, respectively, keep his opponent’s pressure at bay, and beat Alvarado back. Though Alvarado had many spurts where he unleashed his combinations, Edwards became more capable in dealing with his pressure as the match went on. By the end of the twelfth round, Edwards virtually had maintained control over the majority of the latter rounds, culminating in a hard-won but efficient win for him.

With his victory over Felix Alvarado, Sunny Edwards has established himself as one of the best Flyweights of his division but with merely one world title, he still needs to establish himself against other champions or would-be champions in the division. Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (17-0, 11 KO’s) – who Edwards called out in his post-match interview in the ring – is currently the WBC Super Flyweight champion, and has already expressed his interest in moving down and fighting Edwards, therefore making a fight between the two possible.

Edwards also called out Julio Cesar Martinez (18-2, 14 KO’s), who is currently the WBC’s Flyweight champion, and is also a prospective opponent for the Brit. Martinez’ last match was in March where he tested himself a division up as a Super Flyweight against Roman Gonzalez (51-3, 41 KO’s). Unfortunately, he lost by unanimous decision. His previous match was in 2021, where he defended his WBC Flyweight title for the fourth time in a match – against Mcwilliams Arroyo (21-4, 16 KO’s) – that ended up being ruled as a no-contest due to an accidental headbutt. With no rematch scheduled between Arroyo and Martinez, there is no real obstacle to a fight occurring between Edwards and Martinez, but the latter will likely be looking to take up a tune-up fight after his last loss.
